A fabric covered box is an inexpensive decorative accessory. You can find inexpensive dollar store boxes and cover them is gorgeous fabrics, or in this case, with a simple place mat.
You don’t have to buy new decor when you redecorate. Covering anything with fabric gives it a whole new look for a lot less than the cost of a new piece.
So here’s the story.
I recently did some redecorating in our basement family room. By keeping the walls and sofa neutral, I can easily switch out accessories and pillows to give the room a whole new look.
I love this little box, but I am switching out the orange pieces for blues, so it just didn’t work anymore.
It sat in the Goodwill pile for a few weeks until I saw this Blue Global Stripe Placemat a Target.
(total aside–I just went to get the Target link for this placemat and spent 20 minutes browsing the Nate Burkus goodies. I just got lost in Target without even leaving the house! The disease is real!)
I made a mad dash for the Goodwill pile, grabbed the box, whipped out my tools, and got jiggy with it. Here’s what I used for my jigginess.
- glue gun
- measuring tape
- seam ripper
- navy craft paint
- sponge brush
Step 1: Remove the back from the placemat with the seam ripper.
Step 2. Measure all sides, and add one inch.
3. Cut pieces to fit each side.
I used one piece to cover three sides, and an extra short piece to cover the back. Since the back of the box would not be seen, I didn’t worry too much about matching the pattern.
4. Fold edges over 1/2 inch and hot glue fabric panels in place. Don’t get hot glue on your newly manicured nails. Repeat the same process for the lid.
5. Use a sponge brush to paint the outer edges with acrylic paint.
Note: I had a handle on the lid of the box that I removed since I couldn’t figure out a way to glue the fabric around it. No big loss.
6. Tweet about how much money you just saved by using a $5.00 placemat to cover your box with fabric.
Or don’t, ’cause that could be boastful, but you can just be happy inside that you got some redecorating done for CHEAP.
(See what I did there? Tweet and cheap? It’s a bird theme. Sigh.)
What else can you cover with a placemat? A fabric covered box is just the beginning. I’ve got my eye on a magazine rack and a picture frame. There is no rest for the glue gun in this house!
